 I made a sign that I wanted to be set free. He shook his head and held his hand to show that I must be carried as a prisoner. However, he made other signs to show that I would have enough to eat and drink and would be treated well.

I thought again of trying to break my bonds (я снова подумал о /том, чтобы/ попытаться разорвать свои узы). I was later told (позднее мне рассказали; to tell) that the doctors had put a sleeping potion in the casks of wine, by order of the Emperor (что врачи по приказанию императора подмешали сонного питья в бочки с вином; put – класть; помещать).
