Заперечне речення – Subject + to be (am/is/are) + not + verb (-ing) + …
She is not (isn’t) petting her dog now. – Вона зараз не гладить свою собаку.
Питальне речення – (Question word) + to be (am/is/are) + subject + verb (-ing) + …?
Is she petting her dog now? – Вона зараз гладить свою собаку?
Питальна форма може будуватися як зі спеціальним питальним словом – question word, яке ставиться на початку речення, так і без нього.
Якщо в реченні послідовно описується кілька дій, що відбуваються в момент мови, і ці дії відносяться до одного і того ж іменника, то допоміжне дієслово to be, використовується тільки з першим дієсловом.
They are having sandwiches and drinking coffee. – Вони зараз їдять сендвічі і п'ють каву.
Короткі відповіді
При відповіді на питання, що передбачає відповідь так чи ні, використовуються наступні шаблони:
Am I reading the book? – Yes, I am. – (позитивна відповідь) – No, I am not. – (негативна відповідь)
