Why is Tinker Bell not friendly to Wendy, and where does she lead Wendy at the end?

Chapter V: The Island Comes to Life

When Peter Pan comes back to the island, everything wakes up. While he’s away, the Neverland is quiet. The fairies sleep longer, the animals take care of their babies, and the pirates and Lost Boys only make faces at each other. But when Peter is near, the whole island is full of energy.

Tonight, the island is busy. The Lost Boys are looking for Peter, the pirates are hunting the boys, the redskins are chasing the pirates, and the animals are after the redskins. They all move in circles, never meeting because they move at the same speed.

The Lost Boys are not thinking about fighting tonight. They are eager to see Peter. There are six boys, counting the twins as two. Let’s watch them quietly as they move through the forest.

The boys wear bear-skin clothes they made themselves. They are round and fluffy, and when they fall, they roll like balls. They walk carefully and hold daggers in their hands.

First comes Tootles, the bravest but also the unluckiest boy. He often misses the big adventures. If he goes to collect wood, something exciting happens while he’s gone. This makes him sad, but it also makes him kind. Poor Tootles doesn’t know that Tinker Bell is looking for trouble tonight and may trick him.

Next is Nibs, cheerful and bold. Slightly comes after him, always whistling tunes he makes up. Slightly thinks he remembers life before the island, so he acts like he knows everything.

Then comes Curly, who is always in trouble. When Peter asks, «Who did this?» Curly steps forward automatically, guilty or not.

Finally, there are the Twins. No one can tell them apart. Even Peter doesn’t understand what twins are, so they stay close together and try not to cause confusion.

After the boys, the pirates march through the woods. You can hear their scary song before you see them:

«Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life,

A treasure chest and sword so bright!»

The pirates are a frightening crew. Cecco, the handsome Italian, listens for danger. Bill Jukes has tattoos all over his body. Smee, the friendly pirate, has funny names for his weapons. But the most terrifying is their captain, James Hook.

Hook rides in a cart pushed by his men. He is tall and pale, with black curly hair and cold blue eyes. His iron hook replaces his right hand. He is polite but deadly. When he uses his hook, his eyes glow red. Hook’s biggest fear is the crocodile that follows him everywhere. The crocodile once ate Hook’s hand and now wants the rest of him.
