Wendy frowned. «Clever? I’m the one who sewed it!»

Peter didn’t care. «You helped a little,» he said.

This made Wendy upset. She went back to bed and hid under the blankets.

«Wendy,» Peter said softly, «don’t be mad. I can’t stop being happy when I’m proud of myself. But listen, Wendy, one girl is more helpful than twenty boys.»

Wendy peeked out. «Do you really think so?»

«Yes, I do!» Peter said.

Wendy smiled and sat next to him again. She offered him a kiss.

«What’s a kiss?» Peter asked.

Wendy, surprised, gave him a thimble instead. Peter thought it was a real kiss and handed her an acorn button as his kiss. Wendy decided to keep it on a chain around her neck.

«Where do you live now?» Wendy asked.

«With the Lost Boys,» Peter said. «They are boys who fell out of their prams when their nannies weren’t looking. No one claimed them, so they came to Neverland. I’m their leader.»

«Are there any girls?» Wendy asked.

«No,» Peter said. «Girls are too smart to fall out of their prams.»

Wendy was pleased. «You talk so nicely about girls,» she said.

Peter suddenly remembered why he came. «Wendy, do you know stories?»

«Oh yes,» Wendy said. «Lots of them!»

Peter’s eyes lit up. «Come with me to tell stories to the Lost Boys!»

«Oh, I can’t,» Wendy said. «I can’t leave my mother. And I don’t know how to fly!»

«I’ll teach you,» Peter said. «We’ll fly together, see mermaids, and have adventures!»

«Mermaids?» Wendy asked. «With tails?»

«Yes, long tails!» Peter said.

Wendy was tempted. Peter took her hand and smiled. «Come away with me, Wendy,» he said softly.

Just then, John and Michael woke up. «What’s going on?» John asked.

«We’re going to Neverland!» Peter said.

«Can we come too?» Michael asked excitedly.

«Of course!» Peter said.

Peter taught them all how to fly. «Just think happy thoughts,» he said. «And sprinkle a little fairy dust!»

Soon, they were flying around the nursery. «Come on!» Peter shouted. «To the stars!»

And out the window they flew, into the night sky, heading for Neverland.
